Hitting: Norris is not a great contact hitter and probably won’t hit for average at higher levels, but he is very patient at the plate and has a very high walk rate.
Power: A plus tool. Power is mainly towards left field but he is learning to use the whole field more.
Running Speed: Not great, but runs well for a catcher.
Bat Speed: Excellent bat speed as evidence by his power.
Arm Strength: Average with a quick release.
Fielding: Solid blocking skills and good agility.
Strengths: Norris has great power along with very patient plate discipline. He has a compact swing, excellent pitch recognition, and above average defense. He has a great ability to throw out base stealers.
Weaknesses: Not a great contact hitter. Allows a lot of passed balls and loses focus behind the plate at times.
Norris has excellent power potential and if he can improve his defense he could be a star. He had a fantastic 2009 and was named the Nationals Minor League Player of the Year. While at Single A Hagerstown he hit .286 in 437 at bats, had 125 hits, 30 doubles, mashed 23 home runs, drove in 84 runs, and crossed the plate 78 times in 126 games. For a power hitter he had an impressive 1.3 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio, racking up 90 walks and striking out only 116 times, all while sporting a hefty .926 On Base + Slugging %.
Derek should start 2010 with Potomac (A+.) If he continues hitting with his bat a mid-season promotion to Harrisburg is not out of the question.
